How Far in Advance Should You Book Your Wedding Filmmaker?

Most couples book their wedding filmmaker nine to fourteen months before the wedding date, and often earlier for weekend dates during peak season (spring and fall) or for destination weddings in locations like Hawaii or Mexico. Filmmakers who work in a documentary, editorial style typically take on a limited number of weddings each year, so early booking secures both the date and the right creative fit.

Why timing matters more than people expect

A wedding film isn't assembled on a production line — it's crafted, one story at a time. Because we limit the number of weddings we take on each season, dates on desirable weekends (particularly in Southern California's spring and fall windows) tend to be reserved well ahead of the ceremony itself.

A general timeline to work from

  • 12+ months out: Ideal for destination weddings, holiday weekends, or couples who already know they want a specific filmmaker

  • 9–12 months out: Comfortable timing for most Southern California weddings

  • 6–9 months out: Still workable, particularly for weekday or off-season dates

  • Under 6 months: Possible, depending on the season and existing calendar — worth a conversation rather than an assumption

What to do while you wait

Booking your filmmaker early doesn't mean the planning stops there. We often begin conversations about locations, timeline, and creative direction many months before the wedding itself, so that by the time your day arrives, we already understand the story we're there to tell.
